Hurricane Helene made landfall with 140-mph winds along Florida’s Big Bend region late on Thursday, Sept. 26. It is the strongest hurricane—a Category 4—to hit this area in recorded history.

Currently scheduling volunteers beginning Monday, September 30, 2024 through Saturday, November 2, 2024.

Samaritan's Purse Disaster Relief

LOCATION:
Perry, FL (2959 Golf Course Road)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Volunteers will assist homeowners affected by Hurricane Helene and will help in Jesus' Name with tree work, debris cleanup, roof tarping and mud outs. There will be opportunities for overnight and day volunteers. No skills are necessary prior to serving. Volunteers will be led and instructed by experienced team leads.

How to help/volunteer...

Local/Day Disaster Relief Volunteers

Day volunteers may come to Calvary Baptist Church and register as a volunteer starting Monday, September 30.

  • Each volunteer will be required to attend orientation (only once for the duration of the relief effort).
  • Orientation is offered daily at 7:30 am and 12:30 pm.
  • Day volunteers will need to bring a bag lunch.

Overnight Disaster Relief Volunteers

  1. We are in need of daily call-center volunteers to answer incoming calls for community needs.
  2. We also need volunteers willing to wash the Samaritan’s Purse T-shirts each day for the overnight volunteers. Washing may be done at the church campus if you would like to help out with that need.

Overnight Volunteer Information

Overnight volunteers (individuals or groups) must go to https://spvolunteer.org/project-response/741 to make a reservation for staying at our campus and working on local projects through Samaritan's Purse.

LENGTH OF STAY:
  • Minimum stay of 3 days for overnight volunteers.
  • Maximum stay of 2 weeks.

SCHEDULE: 
Volunteers will work Monday through Saturday. At the beginning of a deployment, we work limited hours on Sundays.
 
MAXIMUM TEAM SIZE:
15 (a team is made up of 2 or more individuals)
 
MINIMUM AGE:
  • Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age or older.
  • Youth, ages 14-15, must be accompanied by their parent/legal guardian.
  • Youth, ages 16-17, must be accompanied by an adult chaperone unless the team is registered as a youth group. Youth groups may serve with Samaritan’s Purse and are required to complete a Youth Leader Covenant. Please read more information here.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 
  • Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to the site. 
  • Meals and sleeping quarters are provided for overnight volunteers. 
  • Volunteers need to bring twin size air mattress or cot, linens/sleeping bag, pillow, towels and personal hygiene items. 
  • Tools will be provided, and volunteers are welcome to bring their own tool belts and small hand tools. 
  • Volunteers should dress in long pants and sturdy boots.
