Teach Us to Pray: Kids Devotional

5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide

Day 1: Learning From the One Who Prays
Reading: Luke 11:1-4; Luke 6:12

Devotional: The disciples did not ask Jesus to teach them to pray because they read a book about it. They asked because they watched Him. They saw how real and strong His connection with God was. Prayer was not just a chore for Jesus. It was like breathing for Him. Before you ask God to help you pray, look around at the people in your life. Who do you see talking to God with a loving heart? Seek out those people, watch how they pray, and learn from them. Most importantly, keep watching Jesus.
Reflection: Who is one person in your life who sets a great example of praying? What is one simple thing you can do this week to pause and pray every day?

Day 2: Praying Together as One Family
Reading: Matthew 6:9-13; Ephesians 4:1-6

Devotional: When Jesus taught His followers how to pray, He used words like us and our instead of I and my. He did not mean for prayer to only be done all by yourself. He wanted us to pray together as one team and one family. When we pray out loud together, it reminds us that we are never alone. Our problems and our joys are shared with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Best of all, it reminds us that the God we talk to is a loving Father to all of us together.
Reflection: How often do you pray with your friends, family, or classmates instead of just by yourself? Try praying out loud with a friend or family member this week.

Day 3: Trusting God for Every Single Day
Reading: Luke 11:3; Exodus 16:14-21; James 1:17

Devotional: When we ask God for our daily bread, we are admitting that we need His help every day. It is not a prayer to get a giant mountain of toys or money. It is a prayer that says Thank You for every breath, every meal, and every good thing God gives us. Long ago, the Israelites in the desert tried to hide extra food for later, but it went bad. God was teaching them a lesson that He is teaching us today: trust Me for today. God promises to help you right now, right where you are.
Reflection: What is one thing you worry about or try to fix all on your own? Tell God about it today, and ask Him to help you trust Him with it today.

Day 4: Choosing Forgiveness and True Freedom
Reading: Luke 11:4; Matthew 18:21-35; Romans 3:23-24

Devotional: Jesus taught that the forgiveness we get from God helps us forgive other people. God does not hold His love back until we are perfect, but when we realize how much grace God gives us, we should want to share that grace with others. Staying mad at someone might feel like you are protecting yourself, but it actually traps your heart in sadness. Forgiving someone who hurt you is really tough. If you are struggling to let go of being angry, tell God the truth. Ask Him to help you break free and choose peace.
Reflection: Is there a friend, sibling, or classmate you are upset with? Speak their name to God today, and ask Him to help your heart begin to forgive them.

Day 5: A Father Who Gives Good Gifts
Reading: Luke 11:9-13; Romans 8:14-17; Revelation 21:3-5

Devotional: Everything Jesus teaches us about prayer leads to one amazing truth: God is your loving Father. He is not a grump who hates being woken up, and He is not a vending machine where you put in good behavior to get a treat. He is a Father who loves you and gives you the greatest gift ever: His Holy Spirit to be right there with you. One day, God will fix everything that is broken and wipe away every tear. Until then, you can run to Him anytime just like a kid runs to a loving parent, knowing He is listening.
Reflection: What is something big or heavy on your heart that you have been afraid to ask God about? Pray about it today, knowing you are His child and His arms are always open to you.
